It was recently reported this morning from Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.
Salisbury stated, “For the third time in four seasons with the club, closer Brad Lidge will open the season on the disabled list.” The general manager, Ruben Amaro Jr., came out and said that Lidge will be on rest “for a while”.
This is the same shoulder that had placed him on the DL in the past.
Despite all of the talk around the Phillies, they have been struggling with an injury-plagued Spring Training. Now, talks are beginning to erupt on who should be the new closer for the Phillies– Jose Contreras or Ryan Madson.
In the past, it has been Madson who has stepped up, but there are times where he struggles when it comes to closing games. This is an interesting predicement that the team finds themselves in and it will be interesting to see who gets the closing job.
Lidge stated, “Hopefully it’s a mid-April thing.” Maybe Lidge is being quite optimistic, but we will have a much more accurate estimate after the MRI.
Although they have been hit hard with injuries, I don’t think this should cause a huge panic for Phillies fans. They are still the favorite to win the division and the National League.
Lidge has an MRI scheduled for this Tuesday when the team makes its way back to Philadelphia.
