A few days ago it was reported by numerous sources that a possible trade is brewing between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors involving a swap of two big-name players, Andre Iguodala and Monta Ellis.
Now that it has been leaked, all the fans have left to do is speculate. Speculate whether this is a good deal, whether they want it to happen or if they want more (or different) players involved.
When I heard the rumor at first, I thought it was great for the 76ers, but after further review, Ellis comes with his fair share of cons.
Many Philadelphia fans have wanted Iguodala out for a few years, as they believe he cannot lead the team. And now many fans like this deal, thinking Ellis is the great scorer they’ve been in search of.
He is a prolific scorer who could propel this team to success.
If you read those pros again, those are the exact qualities the Sixers have been looking for ever since Allen Iverson left.
So why wouldn’t the Sixers execute this deal? Well, for a few reasons actually.
First off, if the Sixers land Ellis, he would be the starting shooting guard which would force them to shift Evan Turner to the three slot. The addition of Ellis makes their lineup much smaller and Turner seems like he is more comfortable playing at the two.
With Ellis comes great scoring, but also a lack of defense. A Western Conference scout told Hoopsworld, “Iguodala can guard LeBron James when they face Miami, but if the trade does happen, who’s going to guard him?”
This scout makes a great point, as Turner would be too undersized to guard a physical three in a big spot.
Also, Ellis is somebody who needs the ball in his hands in order to be effective. Doesn’t the same thing go with Turner as well?
Fans may have lost faith after one season, but I feel Turner would be better suited in a complimentary role. But either way, the talent is still there and he has a lot of potential to be a very good player.
However, with Ellis next to Turner, there is a chance that Turner does not live up to his full potential.
Overall, Ellis would be the scorer the Sixers have been dying for, but we have to realize that the lineup shrinks, they are losing a great defender and he will stunt the growth of Turner.
Many people came out and said Iguodala was Turner’s problem, but if the Sixers do acquire Ellis, I feel like they would prefer Iguodala because he knows how to complement players.
I’m not trying to be a downer about getting such a great scorer, but we have to realize that despite the name, Ellis just may not be the right fit for the Sixers.
